How to Season Your RTAnvil Carbon Steel Skillet

October 01, 2026 1 min read

Your RTAnvil Skillet No.1 arrives with a thin coat of avocado oil to prevent rust during shipping — but that’s not seasoning. You must season it before first use, or it will rust. Here’s exactly how.

What You’ll Need

  • Avocado oil (high smoke point)
  • Paper towels
  • Your oven

Step-by-Step Seasoning

  1. Wash and dry. Wash your skillet with hot water and dry it completely — on a warm burner if you want to be thorough.
  2. Oil it thin. Apply avocado oil in a thin, even coat over the entire skillet, inside and out. Then wipe it almost all off with a paper towel. It should look dry, not greasy.
  3. Bake at 550°F for 1 hour. Place the skillet upside down in your oven and bake for one hour.
  4. Cool and repeat. Let it cool, then repeat 2–3 times for a strong foundation.

What to Expect

Your skillet will darken with each use. That’s good — it’s building the natural nonstick patina that makes carbon steel legendary. Cook with fats, avoid long acidic simmers early on, and your skillet will only get better.
